The setup

Nova netPC
Nova netPC is the interactive component of the utility delivery model. This device supports most of the computing peripherals – multimedia, printer, speakers, etc. – and provides real time computing and entertainment. The netPC’s architecture is similar to that of a mobile phone or media player. The computing experience on a netPC is remarkable – with no burden of data backup and security as well as software upgrades.

Network
The users can connect to and communicate with the servers to carry out their computing activities through one of the two types of networks:

	Ethernet
	DSL/ADSL

Server
There are two types of servers:

	Customer application and data servers
	Central server

Customer application and data servers reside in distributed locations near the users’ homes. These servers have all the data and applications that the users require and is responsible for data security, virus protection, as well as application and software maintenance and upgrades. Hence, these servers take care of all complexities of computing.
These customer application and data servers are in turn connected to a central server in a central location. This central server manages the entire utility computing scenario. Any centralized activity such as adding a new feature to the model or upgrading a software is done from the central server.

Management of the entire set-up
The three main components of the utility computing setup – Nova netPC, the network, and servers – work in sync because of the efficient management system developed in-house. This unique management system is a one-point control to manage all aspects of the home computing system from application maintenance and data security to commercial aspects of management. The system manages the following components smoothly:

	Simultaneous management of multiple operating systems
	Control of bandwidth availability and alert of any network-related issues
	Remote management of the status of the user’s netPC and troubleshoot errors
	Management of commercial aspects of home computing service. This aspect of the management system takes care of CRM activities.

The management system’s activities can be summarized as follows:

	User management
		Customer creation, modification and deletion

		Installation and configuration of applications

How it works

	When users switch on their netPC at their homes and log in with their unique username and password, the customer application and data servers are triggered.
	The customer application and data servers authenticate the username and the password and activate the user session. The user can access all the data and applications that come as part of the package.
	When the user logs out the entire user profile is updated and saved.
	All data and applications of a particular user are secure and the unique username and the password given to him or her are the key to unlock the information.
	In case of any server- or network-related issues, the user’s data is still safe. This is possible because of session management features and regular data backups. All troubleshooting and problem tackling is done at the server end.
	It is also possible to store data locally with the help of local USB storage devices.
	The server also takes care of all other management tasks such as usage tracking, billing, application installation, etc.
