Case Study

Computerization for a bank in India
Introduction

A co-operative bank with 4000+ branches, in a state of India, requires an integrated and managed solution to roll out computerization across these branches. The co-operative bank basically caters to providing banking and disbursement of agricultural and non-agricultural credit in semi-urban and rural areas. It also helps its end customers in sales and marketing of their agricultural and non-agricultural produce.

The project is being rolled out in phases in Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu is one of the largest states in India) The first phase covers 700+ branches.

The Business Challanges
  • Robustness of the solution. The branches are in semi-urban and rural areas with no facilities for air-conditioning and controlled environments
  • The bank had no experience in computerization or in managing a computing service/solution
  • The bank staff also needed to educate and aid the end customers in the sales and marketing of their produce
  • Speed for roll out was a challenge. Also training and adoption was a challenge
  • From the perspective of the government, the solution should be controlled centrally. Also, applications and utilities should be administered and managed
Insight to Action
  • A robust and managed solution that can guarantee less downtime. The end customers (the populace in this case) sometimes travel large distances to the bank and hence downtime needs to be minimal
  • A solution that requires minimal administration from an applications perspective. Also, a solution that does not require specific additional branch level customization to scale
  • The users will be semi- skilled. Hence, the solution should be easy to use and handle
  • The solution should be centrally controlled and centrally administered. There should be secured access and control on applications
  • The roll out is in partnership with the largest government owned ISP in India, and needs to cater to a large geographical spread
The Solution
  • 500+ branches are using the Novatium Navigator service as a part of Phase 1. Phase 1 commenced in mid 2010
  • Access rights and privileges based on user roles and job functions
  • The solution roll out is planned taking into account adoption and training needs
  • Mechanisms have been provided for the users (bank staff in this case), to get authentic information from the government
The Impact
  • Increase in productivity in performance of the branches
  • Minimal downtime and more satisfied customers
  • The branches are able to share information from government and other sources such as the web, to aid the end customers in the sales and marketing of their produce and in their businesses
  • Low cost of roll out across a wide geographical spread. Customization, installation and roll out does not require extensive system integration expertise
  • With computerization being implemented, the solution can easily scale to all other branches. It will also allow for a core banking solution to be implemented more easily in the future
End Result Deliverd

500+ branches use Novatium Navigator service with complete manageability. The bank has been able to roll out and use the solution effectively, at the same time expending less time and money.
